What time is CPI released?
Always 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time on the scheduled day. Markets — Treasuries, the dollar, and equity futures — react within seconds of the print.
What actually happens to markets on CPI day?
It's the most-watched inflation print of the month. But does it move markets in a predictable way? We tested every recent CPI release against U.S. Treasury yields. The honest answer:
On CPI release day, the direction of the 10-year Treasury yield is not predictable (p = 0.94) — a hot print is about as likely to push yields up as a cool print is to push them down. But the size of the move is real: yields swing about 1.75× a normal day (p = 0.002).
In plain terms: expect a bigger-than-usual move on CPI day, but don't bet on the direction.
